First light for founders
A non-profit rooted in the Eastern Cape, working with founders across South Africa.
Who we are
We are a registered non-profit, rooted in the Eastern Cape and working with founders across South Africa. Our name is the Swahili word for light, chosen for first light in particular: that early hour when the day has not yet taken shape and everything is still possible.
That is the moment we are built for. People reach us from all sorts of starting points: a rough idea, a steady job and a quiet hunch, or simply the will to build something of their own. We meet them there and build a community around them: a place to learn from entrepreneurs who have gone further, to think alongside peers on the same road, and to gain the practical skills a young business needs. We stay with them as that early ambition grows into a real, trading business.

Our work runs across three areas. Together they take a founder from a first idea to a business that can stand on its own.
We bring founders together through Startup Grind East London: fireside chats with people who have built businesses, events, and a peer network. No founder should build alone.
We run practical, hands-on programmes: mentorship, masterclasses, and funding-readiness training. Founders leave with real skills and a clearer path to investment and customers.
We design and build digital tools, from proof-of-concept apps to working products. When a community problem needs technology, we help build the answer.
Our impact
Mwanga’s flagship programme, Startup Grind East London, has brought the Eastern Cape’s founders together since 2018.
